Lake of the Ozarks State Park (18--22 Nov 2022)

Friday, Nov 18:  It was nice in that I started the day with the guys at Bible study and seeing my loving daughter, Cari.  Since I had delayed the trip to try and get away from the cold weather I was leaving four days later and am only going to be gone 4 days as well because Thanksgiving is coming.... and won't miss that time with the family for anything.  Still though, I left on the coldest day and was thinking on the way that I might have delayed another day.... but here I am.  The trip here was all right, but fighting strong headwinds was fun????? and the winds caused the temp window I had taped in to rattle.  Since I didn't want it to come off I stopped and tried to add more tape, but that didn't do any good because it soon started rattling again.  I did did finally arrive and got set up.... actually just electrical plugged in so I could get the electric heat going.  I probably should have stopped and filled up propane, but the wind chills were really cold and I didn't want the guy to have to come out in that to do it, so decided I would just leave that in God's hands too and pressed on. The temps never got above 28 F and with the wind, it is cold.  Internet is spotty.... even with my extender (wondering if it was worth the cost still).   However, I did get satellite to work.  Fixed some left over pizza for supper and just watched a movie.

Saturday:  Slept really good... especially for the first night.  Keeping the pipes from freezing meant I ran both the heater and furnace through the night with the temp getting down to 18.  I also kept a drip going in the bathroom and when I got up it took a little while before the water ran well which meant the pipes were still beginning to freeze..... but God is good to me and they did not freeze solid.

Thermal underwear has sure been a blessing because wind chills have been in the single digits...  That is when I was thinking about my minimum temp for camping which is/was 25.  While I have a site on the lake, it is low so there is a sandbar.  As you can see from the picture part of the lake is freezing over.

One thing for sure is I am remembering some of my cold weather skills..... but since the temp in the camper is currently 62, it is still chilly.

Took a ride on my trike this afternoon for about 2 miles around the campground.  There are plenty of sites that have a view of the lake through the trees because it is winter.   Temp is about 36 (heat wave) but the wind brings it back to the 20's.  Still dressing for it makes the difference.

Took a second ride later and everything is working well with it.

Haven't started a fire yet but it is suppose to warm up and winds to calm down for the last two days so I am hopeful..... seems weird that I am wanting the temps to warm up to lite a fire?????

Sunday:  Temps really got cold.... down to 14 F with a wind chill down to 8 F.  Needless to say I am staying inside the RV.  The only real challenge I am facing is the pipes freezing.... so far, so good...??

Temps warmed up to 37 so had my first fire and fixed hamburgers and corn on cob for lunch .  It was so very good but probably ate too much.  The host, Tom, stopped by to put the next renter on the post and we ended up talking for about 30 min.  He told me that the lake is low because they lower it at Bangell dam to work on it through the winter and then to wait for the Spring rains to fill it up again.  I mentioned that there seemed to be a lot of people camping and he said that it was about normal since so many people bought campers during the pandemic.  He also indicated that people like to camp over the holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas.... one renter told him to keeps his house clean and the whole family just camps with them.  I like camping but...... not for me.

Internet is still in and out.  I don't think that booster was worth it as I don't seem to be getting anything with it.  Might need to check the connections....

I was able to watch Dallas annihilate the Vikings 40 to 3.  Wish that team would have shown up when they played the Packers.

Monday:  Got up this morning with very little water left because I have been dripping it at night to keep pipes from freezing.  No sure that was a good idea because not only did I run out of water but filled the tanks.  I went to dump them this morning but it turned out they were frozen so I couldn't open the value.  Couldn't empty them but the temp is suppose to get up to 55F (heat wave) so might try again later.  They did have some potable water near the dump so I was able to put some in the water tank. Guess if I am going to camp in the winter I need to do more to prevent pipes from freezing or stay with my previous limit of not going out if the temps are going to be below 25F.  But..... I sure wanted to go and even with the challenges I am glad I came.

Took a couple more bike rides... one was on a trail that was in good shape but was only a couple miles long.  The temps got up to 58F this afternoon so the values finally thawed out and I was able to dump the tanks.... everything went well.  I took a second bike ride this evening and a guy in a motorhome that I really liked was out so I was pulling up and said HI when his dog came at me.  I went into a defensive position and it turned out that he only hit my arm as the owner (Chuck) was yelling at him.  He finally got the dog corralled and we ended up talking for about half an hour.  I asked him if the dog was friendly and so we made friends and he let me pet him (the dog that is...)  Chuck and his wife, Fay, are from Wisconsin on the way to Arizona.  Retired farmer.  Thinking about retiring somewhere in the lower Midwest.

Tuesday:  Leaving today and even with the challenges of the cold it has been a wonderful trip.  Learned a little more about dealing with the cold temps and will make some changes for my December trip.... God willing.  Had another great evening although I think with the cold I am getting up more frequently to go to the bathroom.  So looking forward to Thanksgiving and being with the family again... sure missed them Sunday.

Mark Twain Lake, Indian Creek COE (Oct 17-20, 2022)

 Monday Oct 17

The trip to Indian Creek was 'fun'...  Had strong head and side winds all the way so my baby was eating gas like crazy, but once I got here it was well worth it.  Got site 110 and it is an absolutely wonderful site on a hill which has a view of the lake even with all the trees.  The weather is quite cool on arrival and got down to 27 by Tue morning.  The winds, of course, make it feel cooler.  Everything is working well on the RV and setup wea very easy.   Fixed a fire and has some BBQ chicken strips for super which were delicious.  Just spent the day enjoying God's beautiful creation and giving thanks for allowing me to enjoy it.

Tuesday Oct 18
Slept really good, especially for a first night.  I think I am getting things tweaked to be sooooo comfortable.  I did have an issue where lost power and found out that the cord plug into the camper seems to be a little faulty.... have to find just the right spot to make it connect.
Had breakfast inside since the temperature was in the middle 20's.  But did have a fire later in the day, although I didn't cook anything on the fire.  The temps did get up to close to 50 but with the wind it still felt cold.  I got the bike out and took a fairly short ride which was again quite cold.  Hoping to go further tomorrow since it is suppose to be a little warmer with less wind.

Wednesday, Oct 19
Slept really good again.... maybe even better.  Only got up once to go the bathroom when I saw that the power was out again.  Got my robe and slippers on and just went right to the plug again which was again the problem.  Found that 'sweet spot' so the power was connected again.
Had pancake this morning but again fixed it inside with temps still in the 20's.  Still like the cold or hot temps since I can control the warming up instead of cooling down.   Sure been lazy in the morning with not getting dressed until about 10:00 am.

Took a nice long bike ride.... seems to be working pretty good but being careful.  Still pretty cool even though the temps are near 50.  Even took a nice walk along one of the trails, but didn't go very far.... just don't have it in me anymore.....

Fixed steak and baked potato this evening which was absolutely delicious.  Then about 7:00pm took another bike ride to see the Halloween decorations.  Turned out to be wonderful.  Stopped and talked with a lady who told be the history of the event. Seemed her mother, who is now 74, was part of the group that started the event 37 years ago, and her family has been participating in it every year since.... four generations of them. It has gown so large, 3500 - 4000 people come to do the Halloween walk every year.  They close down that section of the campground to do it.  They have even limited the number of cars that can get into the park.  The participants really get into the displays.  These are just some of them:

Last day and it is kind of sad.  Slept really well last night.... the recliner is working perfectly.  Temps this morning are a little warmer...  mid- 30"s.   Right now watching the sunrise over the lake.... God is sooooo good.

Rend Lake - Gun Creek COE (Sep 26 - 29 2022)

 Mon, Sep 26

Nice drive - everything seems to be working all right. Stopped at rest area which is perfect 1 hour away.  Site 55 is really slopped and forgot to bring the extra levelers.  Got within 2 degrees and just stopping the refrig occasionally.  I think all the sites on this section are slopped..... but still got some good views of the lake.

The recliner has been just absolutely great.  This is one decision that took a lot of work but it worked out wonderfully. Slept good and even watched Dallas beat Giants in a really tight game.

Didn't have a fire or anything outside since by the time I loaded the camper and drove here I was too tired, so just had a couple of corndogs (sorry Cari).

Tue, Sep 27

This was a day of challenges....  I slept really good especially for the first night.  The recliner is really working out great.

I took a bike ride around the campground which was really nice.  Talked with a couple of people... one was a crew chief on the B-52 and was on Guam the same time we were there.  He was enlisted and in what he called the chicken coops .... Quonset huts.  I was again really blessed with the life that God gave me.

I had talked with the Ranger on Monday and I needed to register since it was not manned when I came in.  So I got on my bike to do it today and there was some kind of problem with the front wheel.  At first I thought it was just loose and when I tried to tighten it up I found out that it was loose but that was because the slot where the wheel axle had widened to the point that it would not hold the wheel.  Looks like I may need a front fork.  This is probably the result of putting electric on it.  So the bike is useless now....  it is something I will have to fix when I get back or get a new fork.

So, without the bike I have been doing more walking but sure miss not being about to cover the distance like with the bike.

Started this Noom program for losing weight and am doing a trial on it for $10 and must admit that since for the last week I have lost 7 lbs.... That is really saying something since I usually gain weight when camping.

Still not getting internet the way I want it to watch streaming movies.  Too many trees for satellite.

Wed, Sep 28

Slept pretty good but the main problem was trying to finish watching a movie with poor internet connection.

Finally had a fire this morning and fixed some bacon and eggs with toast and had some apple cider.  Oh so good!  (This is what I like about Noom..... they say this is fine.... it is about balance and I am in it for long term.)

Took a nice long walk this afternoon..... at least long for me.  It was nice to be extending my walks.... probably good thing my trike broke down....

Had hamburger over the fire and corn on the cob this evening and everything was delicious.

The weather has been near perfect for this whole trip.... thank you, Lord!!

Thur, Sep 29

Last day.... want to leave about noon.  Slept really good again last night... still tweaking everything with the recliner and all is working well.

Fixed breakfast over a fire this morning.... Pumpkin spice pancakes, bacon, warm apple cider...  ate too much but it was just soooooo good.  Just sorry I didn't get to ride my trike but walking wasn't too bad... just didn't get to see as much or take the long trail I was looking forward to doing.  Oh well, it was still a great trip.
